Notes on Inequality #22. Equality Vs. Equity

Equality and Equity.

Equality means treating everyone the same by providing identical resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that people begin from different social and economic backgrounds, so some may need additional support to compete fairly.

Example : Imagine three students preparing for the same examination. Equality means giving each student the same textbook. Equity means giving extra coaching, internet access, or financial assistance to the student from a poor family who lacks these facilities. All three face the same examination, but not the same starting point.

Equality promotes fairness through equal treatment, while equity seeks fairness by reducing disadvantages. A healthy society needs both. Basic opportunities such as quality education, healthcare, justice, and finance should be equitable so that merit, hardwork, and talent – not birth or privilege – play the biggest role in determining success.

Between equality and equity, equity is the more humane approach because it recognizes that people begin life from different starting points. Its purpose is not to create equal outcomes, but to provide a fair opportunity for everyone to succeed.
