Equal Opportunity, Unequal Outcomes.

Equality of outcomes is neither possible nor necessarily desirable. People differ in talent, effort, ambition, circumstances, and opportunities. Society benefits when exceptional individuals in science, business, technology, sports or arts are free to excel.

The real challenge is ensuring equal access to quality education, healthcare, finance, and opportunity. Yet even equal access does not guarantee equal outcomes.

The irony is that people with greater resources often benefit the most from the same opportunities.

As Deborah Orr observed in The Guardian (2009) :

“ Therein lies the problem with the idea of equal opportunity for all. Some people are simply better placed to take advantage of opportunity.”
