HOPE #20: What Can We Learn from the Nordic Model?
What if a Society could combine wealth creation with social responsibility?
The five Nordic nations – Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway – offer an interesting example. They have market-based capitalist economies, private enterprise and entrepreneurship, while also maintaining relatively high taxation, broad social protection and universal public services.
And there is an interesting outcome. According to the World Happiness Report 2026, Finland ranks #1, Iceland #2, Denmark #3, Sweden #5 and Norway #6 in the world for life evaluations.
The lesson in my view, is not capitalism versus socialism.
It is about wealth creation combined with progressive leadership, good governance, social responsibility, opportunity and trust.
The objective is not to eliminate wealth, but to prevent extreme exclusion and ensure that prosperity is more broadly shared.
Can we create a society where economic success is measured not only by how much wealth we create, but also by how many people get the opportunity to live with dignity?
