Notes on Inequality #28.
So what? Is the answer socialism, communism or something else?
The question raised in respect to my post ( series # 26) on wealth inequality, made me think about a larger issue:
– Does addressing inequality mean taking away from those who have succeeded?
Consider a family with four children. Three are well established, while one faces a serious physical or mental disability. Supporting the vulnerable child does not mean taking away what the other three have earned. It means recognising that this child needs additional support.
Shouldn’t a prosperous society work on a similar principle?
I am not against wealth creation, entrepreneurship or the success of the wealthy. In fact, wealth creation is not a zero-sum game. The economy can grow and create more wealth.
But what happens when someone is born into extreme poverty, has poor access to education, healthcare and opportunity, and is expected to compete with those who started with enormous advantages?
Perhaps the real question is not how much we should take from the successful, but how we can ensure that the most vulnerable get a genuine opportunity to rise.
I am not against capitalism; I am against poor leadership and poor governance.
So, the real question is : Can we create more wealth while ensuring that prosperity and opportunity reach those who are most vulnerable?
