Protecting Millions from Silent Financial Traps.
A recent policy direction on regulating online real-money gaming reflects how pro-people governance can protect society at large.
With participation crossing 40 crore users, many – especially from economically weaker sections – were getting drawn into high-risk platforms that often led to financial distress, family breakdowns, and even tragic outcomes like suicides.
While regulation has now stepped in, it’s worth reflecting on the past. During that phase, celebrity endorsement ( mostly by top film stars and cricketers) – even with disclaimers – contributed to the wider acceptance of real-money gaming. Given their impact on the masses, a more cautious approach could have protected many.
Unregulated digital gambling disproportionately impacts the poor, quietly widening the gap between those who can absorb losses and those who cannot.
Sadly, online gambling continues to remain legal in several countries.
Timely government intervention in such spaces is not just about control – it is about safeguarding lives, preserving social stability and ensuring that technology does not become a tool of exploitation.
Good governance, when aligned with public welfare, can truly shape a healthier and equitable society.
